Poznan University of Medical Sciences

Poznan university of Medical Sciences (PUMS for short) is one of the largest and best medical universities in Poland, with over 90 years of academic progress and development and is currently recognised as the largest educational, research and clinical centre in Poland according to the rankings of "Perspectywy", "Rzeczpospolita" and "Wprost". The academic year 2011-2012 saw over 8000 students enrolled, including more than 1000 international students.

It continues to be at or near the top rankings of all medical schools in Poland, having achieved 1st place in both 2009 and 2011 according to "Perspectywy".

Over the years, members of the PUMS teaching and research staff have received prestigious awards and wide recognition for excellence in their work, research and teaching. Some have become esteemed in their own field; in 2008 Dr Maria Siemienow, a PUMS graduate and a professor of surgery, was responsible for leading landmark face transplant surgery at The Cleveland Clinic in the United States.

The university continues to attract and retain the best qualified practitioners and teaching staff, most of the teaching staff being medical practitioners and doctors of medicine and nearly a hundred are doctors of dentistry.

One of the top priorities for the continued growth of the University is the expansion of various forms of collaboration in the areas of teaching and research. The Poznan University of Medical Sciences maintains and develops various forms of cooperation with research centres and universities worldwide through research, participation in international programs and research projects, publications and conferences. It also promotes and takes part in numerous student and faculty exchanges. To this date, the University has entered into more than 30 long-term partnership agreements with medical universities and research centres worldwide.

The University continually develops and upgrades its teaching methods investing in highly specialized equipment and facilities in order to reflect the current advances in medical technology and teaching. For example, in 2010 it opened the first-in-Poland Centre for Medical Simulation, followed by a state-of-the-art Conference and Teaching Centre and a modernized Main Medical Library. It is currently building a Centre for Scientific Medical Information.
